Phil Shaw's Biography
Phil Shaw is a high stakes Sit & Go and Mixed Games player from London, England. He started playing poker with friends and online whilst studying English at Oxford University after seeing the television program Late Night Poker. On graduation in 2003 he started playing more seriously and took a job with Poker Europa magazine, quickly becoming Editor and writing about every aspect of the game whilst traveling to major events worldwide.
In 2005, Phil left Poker Europa to play online full time and write freelance for magazines like Inside Edge and Poker Player amongst others. Before long, he found success on both the live and virtual felts, mainly playing SNG's and MTT's. His breakout year came in 2006 when he scored over $118,000 in two online tournaments and a 3rd place finish in the televised British Poker Open.
From here he found success as a cash game player and by 2006 he was mainly playing high stakes NL Hold'em from $5/10 to $25/50. In 2008, he began to expand his game to include mixed games. Currently, Phil mainly plays SNG's ranging from $200 to $2,000 and mixed cash games from $30/60 to $200/$400, although he has played as high as $1,000/2,000. He is also a multiple time Supernova Elite player, with over 5 million lifetime VPPs.
Phil is the author of two successful strategy books. Secrets of Sit & Gos (2008) was written to be the definitive guide to playing single table No-Limit Hold'em tournaments. His follow-up book Secrets of non-Standard Sitngos (2010) covered over variations of SNG tournaments and also mixed game SNG's.
As a natural extension to playing and writing about poker, Phil entered the world of poker coaching and video producing. Since 2007, he has served as a video producer to multiple well-known poker training sites, covering SNG's as well as and mixed games, and has coached dozens of players in these formats, as well as staking and mentoring players aspiring to make Supernova Elite.
Phil has now brought his wealth of knowledge to Ivey League. His focus at Ivey League will be on Mixed Games in the hopes of helping students become winning players at all variants of poker and increasing the popularity of these formats.
